How Often Should You Change a Pee Pad? (Sooner Than You Think)

The general rule

Change after one or two uses. Not per day, per use. Here's why that matters more than pad marketing suggests:

• Absorbency is finite. A pad that's already holding a full bladder's worth has dramatically less capacity for round two. The second use is when overflow happens.
• Dogs avoid soiled pads. Their noses are thousands of times more sensitive than ours. A pad that seems "fine" to you smells thoroughly used to them, so they aim for the cleanest spot: the very edge, or off the pad entirely.
• Odor compounds multiply fast. Urine begins breaking down into ammonia within hours. One overdue pad can make a whole room smell.

By life stage

• Puppies: after every use or two during active training. A fresh pad keeps the target obvious and the habit strong.
• Adult dogs: one to two uses. If your dog uses pads while you're at work, change it the moment you're home.
• Senior dogs and incontinence care: check frequently, and change whenever there's visible saturation. Skin health matters here, dampness invites irritation.

Overnight pads

One fresh pad before bed, changed first thing in the morning, even if it looks lightly used. Overnight urine has had hours to develop odor.
